Felt is naturally flame resistant; Although it will burn when exposed to an open flame when the flame is removed the felt will extinguish itself. Using a candle inside the lantern IS NOT recommended but other types of lighting are safe to use. 

Felt is also very durable. Even after being crushed it will bounce back. You can also steam it to tide it back up.
